Colorado AI Act: what to expect before it takes effect in 2026

Colorado's new AI law takes effect in early 2026. Here's what consumers and businesses should prepare for.
Colorado is the first US state to pass a comprehensive AI law focused on 'consequential decisions' โ credit, employment, insurance, housing, education, healthcare, essential government services, and legal services.
Developers and deployers of high-risk AI must take reasonable care to avoid algorithmic discrimination. Consumers get notice when AI is used, a plain-language explanation of key factors in adverse decisions, and a way to correct data or appeal for human review.
Expect other states to follow. The law is narrower than the EU AI Act but meaningfully raises the baseline for how US companies treat consumers affected by AI.
